Mar 2025: Vietnam Enters Global Top 20 for Mobile Internet Speed for the First Time

As of February, Vietnam’s mobile Internet speed surged to 144 Mbps, placing the country 19th worldwide, surpassing India, Finland, and even France, according to global Internet analytics firm Ookla. Meanwhile, its fixed broadband speed reached 164.77 Mbps, ranking 35th globally.

The UAE continued to lead in mobile Internet speeds with 543.91 Mbps, while Singapore maintained its top position in fixed broadband with 345.33 Mbps.

Vietnam’s rapid improvement in mobile Internet performance followed the commercial launch of 5G services by Viettel in October 2024 and Vinaphone in December. Before this rollout, the country’s mobile Internet speed was recorded at 54.17 Mbps in September 2024, ranking 51st globally. However, within just six months, speeds nearly tripled.

A report from iSpeed, a tool developed by Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology, confirmed these findings, measuring the country’s average 5G download speed at 187.58 Mbps in February. Among local providers, Viettel led with a median 5G download speed of 226.27 Mbps, followed by VNPT at 157.17 Mbps.

“Vietnam’s mobile Internet has improved significantly since the introduction of commercial 5G services,” noted Ookla.

Ookla’s data also indicated that Vietnam’s 5G usage rate rose sharply from nearly 0% in September 2024 to 31.9% by Feb 2025, highlighting rapid network expansion.

To boost adoption, Vietnamese telecom operators have been expanding coverage and launching new data plans. On March 10, Viettel introduced daily 5G packages starting at VND10,000 (US$0.40). The company reported 5.5 million 5G subscribers and aims to increase coverage to 10 million by the end of the year. VinaPhone currently has three million subscribers, while MobiFone is set to launch commercial 5G services this month.

Vietnam has also implemented policies to accelerate 5G development. A resolution issued by the National Assembly on Feb 19 mandates that telecom firms establish at least 20,000 new 5G base stations by Dec 31 to qualify for a 15% subsidy on equipment costs.
